Driftwood

written by: Andrea Walker

When you see a piece of driftwood
Floating lonely by the sea
Or lay there in the hot sun
Will you think of me?

Will you remember when
We ran, to frolic in the foamy waves?
How we laughed and then ate ice creams
On that long ago balmy summer’s day

And recall how we collected all the driftwood
And the grey pebbles beached up too
As time stood still for the merest moment
As if it was just me and you

I’ve savoured all those thoughts
Of our last holiday together
And when the memories become too much
It’s the driftwood that I still treasure

It takes me back to you
And your sad sweet lovely smile
Because we both knew what was imminent
That I’d only have your future presence for a while

So I like to think of you as driftwood
Just lying on that sunny beach
Never really too far away
But forever out of reach
