Farewell, Sweet Bren

farewell, sweet bren

written by: Linda M. Crate

it seems surreal
the fact that you’re gone
doesn’t seem true
it doesn’t seem real
doesn’t seem possible that cancer
has now stolen from me
three friends,
and i don’t want to believe someone as
sweet and kind as you deserved
to suffer as you did;
why is it that the good die young
yet the wicked remain
long past their expiration dates?
i want nothing more than to see you beat cancer
because i’ve never met anyone that has,
and it breaks my heart;
because i know you were so loved by so many
helped so many
including me—
this monday is tragic
i don’t want to remember it as real
just some nightmare
we’ll all come to wake from,
and when i wake we’ll all see bren is fine;
but there’s another part of me that knows that cannot be
you’ve gone where we cannot follow
my only solace is that you are no longer suffering
that the pain you felt so long can no longer claim you.
