The Spirit Of Christmas

the spirit of christmas

christmas trees gleaming
so bright full of ornaments and light
presents tucked beneath the tree
like children in their beds,
but somehow when you wake there’s
an explosion of more gifts
because santa came;
candy canes and chocolate
greet the faces of good
as mother and father watch them unravel
their gifts—
lovers kiss
some skate across the ice
a season of goodwill and peace toward
every man and woman
ringing bells and collection trays
offerings for those who are without family or shelter
gifts for orphan boys and girls
warmth and love
fall like snowflakes all around,
and the lesson that
it is better to give than to receive
because joy is never something you can buy.
