Below the Surface

Below the Surface

written by: Eliza Segiet

translated by: Artur Komoter

In the blistering silence,
deedy,
thirsty for gems,
they burrow an uncertain future.
The unrest of the seekers disappears
with
the opalescence of the uncovered stone.

They keep looking

– one is not enough.

To fulfill their dreams of wealth,
they settle in the underground
Coober Pedy.

There,
in the desert,
it is better to live below the surface
– the lower the cooler
maybe
– the deeper the closer to the stone prize.
They burrow more corridors of hope
to say
I have everything. The world can be mine.
Worse, when at the decline of life
they understand that

– no loot
will resurrect lost time.

Pod Powierzchnią

written by: Eliza Segiet

W skwarnej ciszy,
zapracowani,
spragnieni klejnotów
drążą niepewną przyszłość.
Niepokój poszukiwaczy znika
wraz
z opalizacją odkrytego kamienia.

Szukają dalej

– jeden to zbyt mało.

By spełniać marzenia o bogactwie,
osiedlają się w podziemnym
Coober Pedy.

Tam,
na pustyni,
lepiej mieszkać pod powierzchnią
– im niżej tym chłodniej
być może
– im głębiej tym bliżej do kamiennej zdobyczy.
Drążą kolejne korytarze nadziei,
by móc powiedzieć
mam wszystko. Świat może być mój.
Gorzej, gdy u schyłku życia
zrozumieją, że

– żadne zdobycze
nie wskrzeszą utraconego czasu.
