  1. Where, do you hail from?
I was born in Italy, a town of Roman origins, Opitergium, now renamed Oderzo. It is a quiet town in a strategic geographic position: 40 km from Venice and about the same distance to reach the Dolomites. My town offers everything you need: long walks along the river where you can see the reflections of Roman statues and ruins, good restaurants, cultural communities, and sports facilities. Though I have travelled a lot and spent summer periods in the US and UK, after a short while I felt the need to come home, to my family, and friends.
  1. What is the greatest thing about the place you call home?

To me, the greatest thing is the sense of community. Having lived here most of my life, I know a lot of people and it is great, when you go out for a walk, to meet friends and stop for a chat or go to the café. Saturday night dinner out has become a tradition, it can be a Pizza Bar or a restaurant, the place is not important, what is worth is being together, and exchanging ideas: we relax and laugh after a week’s work. In summer then we can plan short excursions to the seaside or the mountains.

  1. What turns you on creatively?

Nature is the greatest source of inspiration and strong emotions either joyous or painful. Alone in my study, usually very early in the morning, I try to find the connection, try to merge emotion, and feeling with nature. My imagination works better when I am alone and my mind is free from daily worries. I look out of the window and the sight of the river flowing quietly is the only company I need to write.

  1. What is your favorite word, and can you use it in a poetic sentence?

My favorite word is Sky, it means immensity, it means looking beyond, aspiring high. While walking, either during the day or at night, I raise my head, look up, and observe the shades of blue, the continuous playing of clouds, or the flood of stars and I feel I belong.

The sky should be the daily food for your eyes and mind. It makes you think of the immensity surrounding you, an immensity which you are a part of.

  1. What is your pet peeve?

Being early, as it is my habit, and having to wait for people who are never on time. To be interrupted with silly questions while discussing a serious problem. Bugs flying around the room, especially during the soybean harvest. People who think that poetry is useless.

  1. What defines Lori Marchesin?

Being with people who share my ideas and ideals and help me feel at ease and completed by them. The continual attention to doing what I do with love and care, helping others when in need, and being open to new proposals with no discrimination of any kind. I make mistakes, that’s human, but I really try to learn and am ready to apologize. I am the worst critic of my work and do need advice from people I trust.
